Notes: Author’s dedication to Guglielmo Gonzaga, Duke of Mantua. Baldassarre Pisanelli studies in Bologna, where he graduated in medicine with Ulisse Aldrovandi. In 1559, he was made headmaster of theoretic medicine and taught until 1562, when he bagan to travel to Tunisia to study the plague. He returned to Rome, where he was a hospital doctor at Santo Spirito of Saxia, the top hospital in the city. The first edition of this treatise, was printed on fine paper and was followed by editions printed in smaller formats, testimony to the popularity of the book.
