Italian salts and spices: the regional flavors of Italy

The costal road that runs along the western coast of Sicily from Marsala to Trapani is lined with salt-mines.  The salt beds beginning Laguna dello Stagnone and end in Trapani. From June to September, it is possible to visit the area and watch the crystallization and harvest of the Sicilian salt.

This stretch of road leads you through some of the most important salt beds in Europe in terms of both the quantity and quality of the salt. The quality comes from the high concentration of salt in the Mediterranean Sea and the favorable weather conditions.
