Food History
Made with simple and commonly found ingredients, meringues, according to legend, are believed to be shaped like the body of a young princess. Popular throughout most of Europe in the 18th century, this delicate sweet was likely invented in the Swiss town of Meiringen by a pastry chef with Italian origins, Mr. Gasparini. Story has it that Gasparini was in love with the daughter of the Polish king and created meringues in her honor.
