Carnival in Italy
Carnival is a festival linked to the Christian tradition and it is universally marked as a celebrations of popular form.
The name comes from the Latin "carnem levare" - literally "remove the meat" - as it highlights the beginning of the period of penitence before Easter: in fact the last day of Carnival is called "Mardi Gras" and precedes ash Wednesday, which marks the beginning of Lent.
Many Italian cities are famous for carnival tradition.
The most famous are:
