    • Printed on page 1 of the magazine Emporio pittoresco A. III, n. 87, published in Milan by Sonzogno between 1864 and 1889. The image depicts the counters of the open-air fry shops that were set up for the celebration of March 19th, when people across Italy eat fritters in honor of St. Joseph.
The image accompanied an article, stating:
“Every where in Italy on St. Joseph’s day, it is the custom to eat fritters. In Naples, they call them zeppole, in Lombardia, tortelli. We do not know the origin of this tradition. In Rome on St. Joseph’s day, open-air fry shops honor the Saint by preparing these fritters, and there are a lot of fry shops that open up for that day. Crowds surround the counters, eagerly awaiting fritters, like at the shop Pintauro in Naples and pastry shop in Brera, Milan".

    • This piece is one of 101 engravings made to illustrate the works of Virgil in the English translation by John Ogilby (1600-1676) published in London by Thomas Warren in 1654 (The Works of Publius Virgilius Maro. Translated, Adorn'd with Sculpture, and Illustrated with Annotations. London: Thomas Warren for the author, 1654). The scene is based on book 7 of the Aeneid (vv. 165-180), and the debarkment from the Eneaon Italian soil and the meal of the Trojans in the forest. Virgil describes how they were forced to eat hard focaccia. The baroque style of the piece makes the lean meal appear like a abundant feast.
