Food and Culture
The Academia Barilla Gastronomic Library houses a collection of over 11.000 books that range from general cookbooks to specialized Italian culinary histories. The library is open to the public and can be accessed online.
Academia Barilla was inaugurated in May 2004, when we opened the doors to our International Gastronomic Center and set out on our mission to preserve, cultivate and promote the art of Italian gastronomy.
Within a year, we created the Academia Barilla Gastronomic Library – an essential step in accomplishing our mission. The Library houses a unique collection of Italian cookbooks and many other texts on culinary traditions. Our collection of over 10.000 books on food and gastronomy is available to the public.
The Library contains a number of specialized texts on food history and gastronomy that span from the 16th century to the present. We are constantly adding to our collection, acquiring both recently published works and classics from the past.
“We think of the Gastronomic Library - says Gianluigi Zenti, President of Academia Barilla – as a research and study tool. It is a body of knowledge that will become a resource for the entire national and international community of people interested in food and gastronomic tradition. Academia Barilla is dedicated to defending and promoting this patrimony, which, together with our educational programs and product line, forms our mission.”
Thousands of books available to the public
The Academia Barilla Gastronomic Library houses over 11.000 titles, dating back to the 16th century. Our collection is divided into categories that range from pasta, vegetables, sweets, bread, game, fruit, fish, cheese and wine.
Specific sections are dedicated to culinary history and culture; important gastronomic events; classic cookbooks; the culinary interests of historical figures; diet and nutrition; ingredients and how to use them; and regional Italian, and international, cuisines. Our section of periodicals includes collections of over 40 magazines related to food and wine.
Our Library is a rich cultural patrimony. It is a precious tool restaurateurs and chefs looking to educate themselves, research a specific topic, or simply to find new recipes. The library is also an essential part of our culinary courses.
One can search our collection in person or on the web, thanks to a special agreement with the Comune of Parma, signed on May 28, 2004.
The Gastronomic Library is also part of the National Library Network. This agreement allows anyone interested to access our unique collection of books, simply by entering the Parma Library System, available at: http://opacsol.unipr.it. In the category box labeled “Biblioteche,” select Biblioteca Gastronomica Academia Barilla. It is possible to search by author, title or keyword. All of the relevant works in the Academia Barilla catalog will appear. You can then reserve and check out the book at the Library itself, located in the heart of the Barilla Center, just a few minutes from the center of Parma.
Some of our rare books are not included in the catalog and can not be checked out.
